"I personally don't smoke, but until they go after overeaters, they need to leave everyone else alone."
--Gov. Tim Kaine
Ok, for the sake of my conservative credentials, I am against the smoking ban. I don't buy the lame idea that our health is at risk by people smoking. One of my brothers smoke, I wish to god he didn't, but I don't want the state government telling him he can't. Once you pick one vice to outlaw, others will follow. Soon we won't be able to drink in bars, eat hamburgers at fast food joints, and what not. The fast food thing is especially on the horizon.
But you know what, I got a different few of this from my brother in New York City. Of course, there was a well-publicized smoking ban there. I said to him, "isn't that ridiculous? I mean, where on earth in any letter of any constitution does it allow a government stop people from smoking?" Obviously, I was at my persuasive best. My little brother usually agrees with me politically, and initially did on this as well. But then he said something interesting. This isn't about health, or second hand smoke, or whatever the loony left wants to make it about. He said, "Chris, I thought it was stupid, too. Then I went ot the bars and nobody was blowing smoke in my face, I could breathe. It was actually kind of nice."
I'm still against the smoking bad, because quite frankly there are more important things to do than regulate our personal lives. But still, its something to think about.
