DID JIM WEBB BELONG TO THE COSMOS CLUB???
According to Liz Mair at GOPProgress, a reader recalls Mr. Webb stating under oath during his 1988 Senate testimony that he belonged to this club:
But now, it looks like there's another potential women-related scandal involving Webb rearing its ugly head. It turns out that, as of his confirmation as Secretary of the Navy, Webb was a member of a professional club that, despite much public outcry, refused to admit women to its ranks until 1988. It's just further proof that Jim Webb is no fan of women... A female reader here in the DC area, who is a lawyer herself and remembers the outcry over the club in question's blatant sexism in the 1980's, tipped me off to this story. Here's the deal. The Cosmos Club, a professional society here in DC, is well-known for its refusal, until relatively late in the 20th century, to allow black members to join (and because JFK ultimately failed to join it as a result of its racist membership policy). For those in DC's professional circles during the 1980's, who happened to be female, the Club was also known for refusing to admit female members until 1988, when it dropped its sexist policy as a result of the Washington Human Rights Office ruling that there was "probable cause to believe" that the Club's anti-women policy violated DC's anti-discrimination law, and the likelihood, in view of the ruling, that the Club would lose all its city licenses and permits, effectively putting it out of business.
