The USA Today is reporting that Fred Thompson is starting the most important part of running for president--raising money! Thompson has really done a a masterful job here, sitting above the fray until the summer while all the other candidates make soundbyte headlines based on something they said that upset someone. Think about it. When has the media covered this race? When its about Mitt Romney's religion, or John McCain's temper or Rudy Giuliani's struggles with abortion. Meanwhile Fred Thompson has done nothing but generate positive buzz.
From the article:
Former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson hasn't formally announced he'll run for the Republican presidential nomination -- but today he did begin raising money for a prospective bid, USA TODAY Washington bureau chief Susan Page writes. She continues:
In a conference call with about 100 people -- many of whom have urged him to jump in the race -- Thompson asked for their help in raising funds for a testing-the-waters committee, which is likely to be formed next week. That money could be used for a campaign when and if he's ready to run.
Fred should be able to raise money fairly fast. Up to this point, many conservatives have "settled" on a candidate, but Thompson really is generating some powerful and serious support. Expect many a defection from endorsing congressman. Marsha Blackburn has already jumped ship from Mitt Romney to Fred. I can imagine there will be many more.
The RPV Gala should be fascinating to watch.
