I'm not sure McDonnell's willing to turn this money down
"Please stand firm against this maneuver of the Obama Administration to increase states' dependency on the federal government. This bailout will also raise our national debt which is owed to foreign dictators who reject our vision of inalienable rights and self-governance."
"It is wrong to indebt those who have no way of expressing their vote to pay for our reckless spending. In fact, it is 'taxation without representation' obligating future generations without their consent"
I agree whole-heartidly with Del. Marshall, mostly because of the dependence of federal money this creates. Its like a drug, you know you shouldn't take it, you know its going to make you broke, but the fix is just too good. The problem is that there are very few politicians can let this money go by because it solves so many problems short-term, but it causes more and more in the future.
The problem is fixing the right now does more damage. This kind of cash is usually pumped into existing projects or used to launch new ones. But its only a one-time infusion, and these kinds of projects tend to snowball as they move down hill faster. So that means that money has to be replaced, usually by federal earmarks, state tax increases, or passing the buck to local government who are forced to consider things like meals taxes. In the end, it all ends more deficits and the greater need for states to go begging to the feds for more money and the cycle just repeats itself.
It amazes me that Bob Marshall has to make so many lonely stands on issues like this, and catches as much flack from Republicans as he does Democrats.
Here's the deal. You take the devil's money, you have to sell your soul.
Here's the other deal. If our political leaders take the Obama money, we throw their asses out on the street each and every November.

Some tar and feathers would be appropriate, too. These scoundrels should hear footsteps and fear their own shadows.

its not 'obama' money, its tax payer money. the american people, virginians included, gave up that money and now it is being returned. it doesnt matter who is president when the money is given back, it is none the less being given back. if virginia does not accept the funds, it will go somewhere else and we will still be stuck in the mess we are in and local governments will be forced to raise taxes.
however, a good argument against accepting the funds, would be the strings that are attached to it. does the state have to match a portion of the funding? does it have to go to certain localities? does it have to pay for certain programs? what exactly is in the fine print?
there's not a lot left to cut out of local budgets anymore, especially in fairfax. there may be a few million, but that's not enough to close the gaps without raising taxes. BUT, couple that with federal funding and you may be able to make it work.
but saying no because a democrat is president is foolish and short sighted. i think the governor knows whats best, marshall is politically posturing himself for senate. we need leaders, not political hacks.

This local gop organization is really a circular firing squad. The local gop is why the Republicans are always snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
There is plenty of money to cut. Illegal aliens are stealing millions from Virginia. The cost to provide health care, schooling, prisons, and other social services could be saved by enforcing existing laws.
There are too many state and local employees on the payroll. Too many administrators in the school systems. Fairfax County government has huge office buildings. Who's working in those buildings. Let's cut government employees across the board by 10%.
Whenever anyone says we can't cut anymore and must raise taxes, you are listening to a thief and a crook. That's how we got in this problem, by spending too much. The government already takes too much.
Tar and feathers for the local gop. They sound like Democrat lite. Tax and spend other peoples money.

As attractive as the notion that there is a vast Fort Knox of appropriations funds one could use if only the illegal aliens could be dealt with is, its just that - a notion. The impact in Virginia is relatively minor and certainly tiny when you compare it to the scale of the budget.
There really ISNT any money out there right now. And Virginia is doing better than most.
local gop is right, McDonnell would be foolish to turn down this money (money that has 1) already been taken from the tax paper and 2) has already been appropriated) providing that it does not impose an undue burden on the Commonwealth as far as strings attached, ect.

news flash teddy.....the county board does not control how the school board spends their budget. which local government employee would you cut? be specific, don't just talk in vague terms. police? fire? social services? name specific departments that you believe can be closed to make up the gap. calculate in the amount of time and money it would take to kick out every illegal in fairfax county (not that many to begin with courtesy of prince william) and you are still left with an immediate need to close a budget gap. the numbers just don't add up. don't believe me? take a look for yourself. the county places the budget online. i read EVERY single public comment (all 193 pages) and the VAST majority of them said "raise my taxes before you cut school funding"....people in fairfax demand a level of service and are apparently willing to pay for them. i guess that's what happens when you are in the 2nd wealthiest county in the nation.

Local probably lives with mom in the basement and doesn't pay taxes.

Local wants to spend other people's money to create a habitat for illegals. The fact is that when you stop subsidizing their habits by giving them free stuff, and you lock them up for violations and infractions of the law (like being here), they self-deport and move to the next place that lacks the guts to stop subsidizing them. The People's Republic of Maryland is close by. Seems like a great place for local, too.

and we see the finest right wingers come out...all bark....no evidence.
Posted by: local gop | August 29, 2010 at 02:19 PM
Evidence? Every post by made by local gop is just more evidence of the rot that infects the Republican party.
November will be a great exercise in shoveling out the stables. I'm sure local and his ilk will vote for Connolly and Moran anyway. I wouldn't waste much time grappling with them.

If the local governments are able to stick this money in reserve, then it's a wash, IMHO. Money being fungible, that should be doable, except that this Administration is just the type that is ideological and anal-retentive enough to make this money unfungible (my term) and locked into new and permanent spending.
If so, the prudent thing would be to turn it down.

Yes Local GOP, we should continue down the same road we have been going down. This huge government thing has been so very wonderful so far. In fact, if the huge government works so well why not grow it even faster. You ask for evidence, maybe you should look out the basement window once in a while. The country is going to hell and you are enjoying the ride.

so insightful bob.

Bob,
And you are insightful. Local is a known hack and left over from the Herrity campaign.
Word is that he's working on his GED in his mom's basement somewhere in never-neverland.

He's from the Herrity campaign? Damn, we ought to burn him at the stake then. How dare anyone differ from the Purity Line (the new Party Line).

wow....the venom on the far right rivals the venom from the far left....i guess all fringes are created equal.
