Will Haley Barbour Be Made To Pay For The Sins Of The South?

Whenever we get into questions of race and southern politicians, its always tricky.  To say their is a hyper-sensitivity when white, southern, Republican politicans speak up is an understatement.  Just as Trent Lott what happens when you joke around about race.

The problem is that isn't not to be joked around about.  But I see the vampires sinking their teeth into Haley Barbour this week, where essentially he was defending his hometown of Yazoo City, and I wonder if he will be made to carry the entire southern past on his shoulders should he run for president?  We have had only three true southern presidents since the Civil War - Woodrow Wilson, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter (Texas is its own world).  All three were able to avoid this burden because they were liberals.

Examing Haley Barbour's life is fair game if he runs for president, but making and holding him responsible for the tortured past of his state is not.  He deserves to be criticized for saying that the Citizens Councils where somehow respectable.  While he was correct that they banned the KKK, the point of the CCs was to take the Klan's ultimate goal and make it modern, appealing, and reasonable.  In many ways, that is even more nefarious. 

But the broader issue that I see is that Gov. Barbour will not be judged by his career, where he proved he was perhaps the best governor in the country over the last decade, but by the terrible sins of all of us.  And that simply isn't fair to him, to others who deserve more blame.  Barbour proved what kind of a person he was when 1/3 of his state, black and white, was wiped out by Hurricane Katrina.  I would hope that when Gov. Barbour does decide to run for president, that he will give a speech on race.  It would be a fitting bookend to President Obama.  I think Barbour has proven what a positive the Civil Rights movement wants for the entire South. 

I hope America is ready to move past this.  For liberals, it seems they cannot because they are the ones that fan racial flames, they are the ones preventing America from moving past this.  I wonder if a reporter would be brave enough to ask President Obama if he thinks Governor Barbour is a racist.

This was not a case of misspeaking during a hostile questioning. This was a puff piece about the Governor done by a friendly publication. And he waxed poetic and spoke fondly of the White Citizens Councils.

Do I think Haley Barbour is a racist? No, I don't. Were the White Citizens Councils an organization of virulent racists committed to continuing the denial of the right to vote to their fellow citizens who were the wrong color and to keeping segregation alive and keeping blacks subservient? Yes they were. And anyone who lived in Mississippi at that time knew it. Including Haley Barbour.

I have no idea why Barbour glossed over the evil history of the White Citizens Councils and portrayed them as if they were somehow benevolent. But is is highly disingenuous of you to attribute it to "hyper-sensitivity". His whitewashing (pardon the pun) of history is pretty outrageous.

Rather than trying to gloss over his strange remarks, perhaps Barbour might elaborate and explain them. Then perhaps we could better understand what he meant when he said something so outrageous and at odds with the facts.

Ok, so he was being polite to the Citizens Councils from his home town and glossing over history. Let me say, as a fellow Mississippian, I had never heard of those until now. Did the Yazoo City Councils do what he says they did? I dont know and no one really does. But to claim he is racist because he did not lump this particular Council in with the rest of them is a bit of a stretch. Its not like he went on TV and praised every Council as being a beacon of civil rights progress. He complimented this one particular Council that he had a personal first hand knowledge of. I can also tell you that there is, unfortunately, still a lot of racism in the South. And there is still a lot of segregation as well. Not officially, but the expression about being on the wrong side of the tracks is still very true and its a sad thing.

Did Haley grow up in a racist era? yes. does that make him racist? no. but you have an old white guy with a southern drawl and racism is a cheap easy shot. the NAACP (ultimate racist hypocrites themselves) and Huff Post (a really credible news outlet) edit comments and spin them to mean things that they just dont mean.

Obama has Jeremiah Wright (his self claimed spiritual mentor that talks about how evil white people are), and Bill Ayers (who inspired him to go political) and no one seems to care much. Where was the NAACP when Jeremiah Wright went on his tirades about how evil "whitey" is? Oh, I guess that does not "Advance Colored People" I think hypocrisy is knocking....

Loudoun Insider, I have always found you to be a reasonable person who generally tries to take an objective view of things. I have to say though that I think you are off base when you assert that the reaction to Barbour's remarks is somehow unfair to him.

As I said above, I do not think Barbour is a racist. I am aware of nothing that would suggest he is. Further, I consider him to be a heavyweight. And I'm not talking about his physical size. He has been an effective governor, RNC Chair and RGA Chair. He knows his stuff when it comes to both politics and policy. He is a credible candidate for president.

If a potential candidate for president says something really stupid it is hardly unfair or unreasonable that it would raise questions. And it is hardly unfair or unreasonable that the potential presidential candidate would be expected to explain his remarks.

I understand that some of the reaction is motivated by political partisanship. But that is beside the point. People without a partisan ax to grind might also like to hear what a potential president was thinking when he said something so forgiving about such a hateful group that was bent on abusing an entire segment of the population. The White Citizens Councils were not nice folks. And their smoother and more respectable facade made them even more dangerous than the Klan.

If a potential presidential candidate were to laud Albert DeSalvo and Jeffrey Dahmer for their work in population control I would want to know just WTF he was talking about. When Barbour speaks about a hateful group like the White Citizens Councils as if they were equivalent to the Rotary Club or something I would like to know WTF he was thinking. I don't think that is unfair or unreasonable.

This is not some whacked out chump from some silly PAC or something. This is a man who may ask for our votes to put him in the White House. If he can't understand the reaction to his remarks and explain them satisfactorily then maybe he doesn't deserve those votes.

LI, I have to agree with you on that. People take offense at the drop of a hat. More importantly, words like "racist" and "misogynist" are rendered meaningless when they are used to describe something that doesn't rise to the level that would be accurately described by those words.

A person can be breathtakingly insensitive about matters of race or even quite bigoted without being a racist. I blame the education system. And I bless the good nuns who imbued me with a sense of the importance of choosing the correct word to convey the meaning I am trying to communicate. Alas, we live in an age of mouth frothing hyperbole.

My sensitivity is to the historical record which was so egregiously mischaracterized by Barbour. There are too many out there who are too young to have any memory of those times. I wouldn't want them to mistakenly think that Barbour's characterization of the White Citizens Councils was accurate.

Barbour has issued a subsequent statement attempting to clarify his remarks. That is sufficient as far as I am concerned.

Maybe it will even cause some of the younger people to do a little research into the truly insidious and evil nature of the White Citizens Councils. In that case Barbour may have done a public service.

It isn't just history. Suppression of minority voters, for instance, is a very current issue. It might be nice if it got some attention in the press every now and then. This could be what they call a "teachable moment".

Effective Governor? Puh-leeze. Mississippi ranks last in terms of personal income, health,and education. The state spends twice as much to incarcerate someone in prison($15,000 a year) than it does to educate a child ($7,500 a year).

Barbour is a good ol' lobbyist as well, one of the most corrupt and self-serving politicians operating today -- and that's saying a lot. His family profiteered on Katrina recovery efforts, getting rich off the misery of millions. He was a bag man for Tom de Lay, representing the crooked firm indicted in the money laundering shenannigans. As a lobbyist for Big Tobacco, he withdrew all funding for Mississippi's successful anti-smoking program.

Keep 'em poor, dumb and poisoned. That's what the record shows he delivered for the people of Mississippi who obviously didn't know any better.

Critical thinking has never been a strong suit in the South. Keep Barbour down there, or better yet, off the political scene entirely, where he can't do the the rest of the country what he did to Mississippi.
