Gerry Connolly is a political street fighter who can message, get his voters out, organize, raise money, get nasty, throw elbows, and work extremely hard. Sure he's an assh*le, but nobody cares about that when your winning. He's taken all the tough votes that Periello and Nye did, but he got reeelected.

Gerry got re-elected because his district has been stuffed with apartments, townhouses, and condominiums. Those are places where assh*les and idiots outnumber sane folks. They vote for Gerry in huge majorities.
I live in one an apartment. Most folks are nice enough, but they are young and stupid. Most vote for Democrats (if the vote at all) because they don't have enough experience in life to know that the Gerry Connollys of the world are really just liars and jerks who steal their money and give it to people who don't work as hard as they do.
When these apartment dwellers grow up, have kids and buy houses, they start voting for Republicans. Where ever apartment and townhouse dwellers outnumber single family homeowners, the Connolly creeps usually win.

Actually, it would be great if Connolly ran statewide for an office. He would be crushed everywhere outside of Northern Virginia.
He is a carpetbagger extraordinaire. He speaks like a whore from New York who got thrown out of cab in Boston and hitchhiked to Fairfax County. Only in NoVa could a jerk like Connolly get elected.

Why not Jerry Kilgore for Senate?
Allen is flawed, Stewart controversial. Kilgore was a good AG. He lost the governor's race because of timing, not because of issues or leadership.

What would be super is if Connolly and Moran could be gerrymandered into the same district. Then the two assh*les could choke each other out in a primary. One would survive, but it would be great fun to watch.
