The NRA's press conference was a farce. The need to learn to be man enough to stand up for their principles and make real honest arguments for why the second amendment should be respected and protected.
Instead, they argue that the government (federal or state) should have cops patrolling our schools armed and a national database for the mentally ill (whoever defines that). That is the same power to control as the government taking away guns owned legally. Feckless, clumsy, and downright scary.
I've already maintained on this blog that the real solutions to these problems cannot come from government. Government will just make it worse by either taking away the means citizens have to protect themselves or by registering "mentally ill," like its something out of an X-Men comic. The solutions must comes from friends, relatives, family, and the extended community that has been neutered over the last sixty years by the continuing encroachment of big government into every aspect of our lives. We must stand up as a culture for fight this violence. We cannot allow politicians to use this as one more way to get themselves elected by fear and demagoguery on both sides. Professionals should be empowered to help, not regulated, and in constant fear of being sued.
But the NRA should be ashamed of themselves and real conservatives must be willing to articulate the virtues of gun ownership and the unique ability of citizen of America to defend themselves.
"...that has been neutered over the last sixty years by the continuing encroachment of big government into every aspect of our lives." Please explain what you mean by this, and examples please.
Thank you.

I don't think providing for physical security for the citizens is necessarily a "Big Government" issue. Government is supposed to protect our lives and property. We banded together to secure this. There can be a lot of room for discussion as to how best to do this, but protecting my life against murderers is something that I regard as a core, conservative, Constitutionally defensible function of government.
