I spent the entire general election season in 2007 volunteering for two state senate campaigns. Two districts that were very similar and right next door to each other. One was held by Ken Cuccinelli and the other was held by Jeannemarie Davis. The lessons I learned from watching those two campaigns compete side-by-side taught me lessons that stay with me today. So when I saw this mailer I took a spit take.
"Together with Ken Cccinelli, Jeannemarie can deliver a conservative victory." WTF?
I've told this story time after time, but needless to say the last time Davis and Cuccinelli ran "together" it was a disaster. And the last time they ran together, you could hardly consider Davis a team player. From the beginning, nearly the entire Davis organization derided Cuccinelli, often referreing to him as "Kookinelli." Davis's people, including Congressman Tom, argued that the GOP needed to "moderate," and constantly were looking to triangulate nearly every issue. I was at a YR meeting where JMD said that if you really wanted to be pro-life, that meant you also had to be for women's health issues. Everything conservative had some moderate condition to it. To be for these, you had to be for that.
Jeannemarie's campaigns most impressive feat in this run is to essentially re-write history. The fact is in 2007 Jeannemarie Davis did everything in her power to run as a Democratic with a Republican label. Everything. She down-played her good pro-life past, never even mentioning it in debates. She ran against guns, hard against guns. She tried to paint Chap Petersen as a Republican. This all came from Tom himself. Everything they preached was moderate, it is a Democratic district so we have to run as if we are Democrats. All the while, the Davis pros that riddled her campaign mocked Ken Cuccinelli the entire time. He can't win, they said. He's too conservative, he's too right-wing. Kookinelli, right?
Now, after all that, she is trying to run a racket on Republicans in 2013 that somehow she's ready to be Ken's partner. Six years ago, married to a sitting congressman, JMD and her team looked their nose down at Cuccinelli and most of the type of Republican that suppoted him in those days. Its obvious to people up here that Jeannemarie, and Tom especially, are dying to get back in the game and are now trying to basically lie about the past. I've seen Davis up close, and I know it hurts that they are supporting Ken in any way.
Let me be clear, Jeannemarie Davis would be a catastrophe as Ken Cuccinelli's running-mate. Her past stances on nearly every issue have yo-yo'd based on her desire to continually hold public office. It's only because Tom's name still (for some reason) carries weight in Northern Virginia that Jeannemarie even has a base. Running downstate, they know very little of her past reelection loss where she ran essentially as a Democrat. She not only run against conservatives as a political strategy, she used that strategy to take a ten point shit-kicking from Chap Petersen. So she ran against a Democrat as a Democrat and still lost. WHY ON EARTH would any Republican with any sense ever support this person?
But I guess money talks. That's how the Davis people work.
