It's been 12 years since 9/11. Twelve long years that have worn this country down to something we promised we would never be in the aftermath of the attacks. The rhetoric we've used for twelve years rings hollow now. Freedom isn't free they tell us. Well, last time I checked our country was founded on the principles that our freedom was endowed on us our our creator. Its not something earned or won on a battlefield.
When I look around today I see a country that has become everything we don't want it to be. This isn't about left versus right or Democrat versus Republican because both are culpable in our fall. We can no longer travel unmolested in our country, our every move is watched by cameras, our digital privacy is routinely invaded by our own government, and a generation of Americans don't remember our country not at war with someone. Instead of being the leader of the free world, we are now aggressive dogs ironically held back from war by our old Cold War adversary and their KGB president.
As a country, we are more divided than ever on issues that are less and less meaningful. Behind our backs, hidden behind the echos of our screaming at each other about gay marriage and abortion and birth control and guns, our rulers who told us freedom isn't free use that as an excuse to tear away our liberty piece by piece. More and more our elections are nothing more than bragging rights contests where the winning side gets to rub shit in the losers face. The last presidential election was one of the most embarrassing in memory.
All of this goes back to what happened in the wake of 9/11. Out of fear of another attack we allow a Republican government, with nearly full Democratic support, to create programs and enable existing agencies to take away our liberties in the name of safety. The statistical likelihood of being killed by a terrorist attack is beyond minuscule and yet we allow the madness of a few to effect everything we do as a country, and in the end further divide us to the point where the other side can barely express a single shred of respect for the president in office. The savaging by the left of George W. Bush has been matched by the savaging of Barack Obama by the right. We live now in a world of Team Blue versus Team Red and the most important thing is to win and have access to all the power and money that being in federal government comes with. With more government comes more power and more money to be made by both parties, who like to laugh together in DC while the rest of us fight over table scrap issues.
We sold out. I want my 9/10 world back.
