You know, on the face of it I would guess this was a Republican primary when you have a hyper-ambitious young professional who's run and lost before, an executive with Dominion Power, and an anti-vaccination quack. Low and behold, this is actually the embarrassing choices Democrats in Mount Vernon district are putting forward to replace Gerald Hyland, a fixture for a quarter of a century on the Fairfax Board of Supervisors. This first hit my radar when I heard about a candidate's debate where the three of them allegedly embarrassed the party by trying to out-left each other so badly that they ended up attacking Hyland.
All this would be for naught if in fact Fairfax Republicans had not found what appears to be a competative candidate in Jane Gandee. The GOP locally is once again dipping into the ranks of professional female candidates, which is great. I doubt she's a right winger like me but that won't fly in Mount Vernon. This is roughly a +12 D district but with the right candidate on our side and the wrong candidate on their side this could be interesting. For once the Fairfax GOP is stretching the map in Fairfax ... finding great candidates to run in Drainsville and now Mount Vernon. Let's up Sully can get their act together this Saturday or this could all be for nothing.
As for as minority and female outreach and candidate recruitment, Fairfax is actually doing a great job. Danny Vargas, Jennifer Chronis, Sang Yi, John Guevara (primary), and now Jane Gandee will present voters in one of Virginia's biggest counties with a different face of the Republican Party.
